HazMat Transportation Training

EHS has the responsibility for certifying that employees have received the appropriate training. Individual departments have the responsibility for identifying employees who require training and ensuring that the employees are trained. Depending on the functions of the employee and the types of hazardous materials involved, training will range from approximately 3 hours to several days. The curriculum is described below:

Important: Employees must take the courses in the order they are listed.

Handling Hazardous Package

Required training for employees who handle (load, unload, move) hazardous packages to or from UT vehicles and on UT property:

  1. Safety Awareness:
  2. General Awareness
    • Shipping Hazardous Materials: General Awareness and Familiarization (Prerequisites: OH101 and OH102)

Shipping Chemicals

Required training for employees who ship chemicals:

  1. Safety Awareness:
  2. General Awareness / Function Specific:
    • DOT / IATA Hazardous Materials Transportation Training
  3. Additional Function Specific:
    • OH605 EHS DOT Seminar (Prerequisite: DOT / IATA Infectious Agents / Diagnostic Specimens Transportation)

Shipping Radioactive Material

Required training for employees who ship radioactive materials:

  1. Safety Awareness:
  2. General Awareness / Function Specific:
    • DOT / IATA Hazardous Materials Transportation Training
  3. Additional Function Specific:
    • OH605 EHS DOT Seminar (Prerequisite: DOT / IATA Infectious Agents / Diagnostic Specimens Transportation)

Shipping Infectious Agents / Diagnostic Specimens

Required training for employees who ship infectious agents / diagnostic specimens:

  1. Safety Awareness:
  2. General Awareness/Function Specific:
    • DOT / IATA Infectious Agents / Diagnostic Specimens Transportation (Prerequisites: OH101 and OH102)
  3. Additional Function Specific:
    • OH605 EHS DOT Seminar (Prerequisite: DOT / IATA Infectious Agents / Diagnostic Specimens Transportation)

Alternative Courses

Departments may also arrange for DOT training using resources other than the EHS curriculum, but EHS must approve the course content before the employees take the course.

Refresher Training

Hazardous Materials Transportation Certifications are valid for two years. Contact EHS for information on refresher training at least three months prior to the expiration date on your certificate.
