The University requires safety training for certain workplace and shop personnel to insure that they are adequately informed about physical and health hazards present within the workspace and methods for minimizing the risks of exposure. Required training is determined by job duties and the specific hazards within the workplace.
EHS Courses and Enrollment
UT employees can request online courses through UTLearn. As the employee training management system, UTLearn is accessible only by active UT Austin employees (faculty, staff, or student employee). Nonemployee students needing to take EHS courses may request access to UTLearn through self-registration. Self-registration is currently limited to only students required to complete EHS training. These students and/or supervisors who manage student safety training should contact EHS_Training@austin.utexas.edu to request the URL for the self-registration process.

Responsibilities of Supervisors
Supervisors are required to ensure all their personnel receive proper training and that all training is properly documented and that individuals working in their areas do not engage in activities for which they have not been trained.
Available Training
OH 101 Hazard Communication (General) - Required for all personnel working with or around hazardous chemicals
OH 102 Hazard Communication (Site-Specific)- Taught by the Supervisor. The training must be documented using the standardized HazCom Training Record – Non-Labs Site-Specific (PDF) with checklist covering training topics that is available from EHS.
OH 500 Machine Shop Training - The objective for this course is to introduce employees and students to the hazards of working in machine shops. Employees and students are advised that this is general shop safety. Additional site specific training may be required to qualify for working in your shop The course subjects include the following:
- Roles and responsibilities for shop owners and operators.
- Basic safe procedures for machine shops.
- Common shop equipment and their safe operation.
- Common warning signs and labels.
OH 501 Hearing Protection - EHS wants to ensure that all employees who work in high noise areas, as defined by the University Hearing Protection Overview and Hearing Protection Plan, have the training to keep themselves and their colleagues safe. Through this training you will understand the effects of high noise, how to safely control noise levels, understand the types of hearing protection and when to use it, and your roles and responsibilities.
OH 502 Ergonomics for Childcare Workers - Muscle strains and sprains are a leading cause of work related injuries among child-care workers. This training was designed to show child-care workers how to safely lift children and objects.
OH 503 Asbestos General Information - The objective of this course is provide information for students, faculty, and staff who don’t actively work with asbestos. It provides general information about asbestos and the University’s asbestos management program. It is not designed for people who work with asbestos. If you work with asbestos you require additional training.
OH 505 Aerial Lift Training - This course is part of the requirements to be qualified to use or operate an aerial lift on campus. Topics include training requirements, fall protection, lift setup, weather information, and lift inspection. This course is required to be taken every 3 years.
OH 506 Machine Shop Supervision (Machine Guarding) - This course is part of the requirements to be qualified to use or operate an aerial lift on campus. Topics include training requirements, fall protection, lift setup, weather information, and lift inspection. This course is required to be taken every 3 years.
OH 507 Respiratory Protection - This training applies to all employees and students whose studies or work activities require them to wear respiratory protection. This is the prerequisite training that you must take before taking any of the individual respirator specific training modules. This module is not required to be taken if the only module you need to take is Dust Mask training. This training is required initially and every 3 years thereafter.
OH 508 Respiratory Protection: Dust Mask - This training applies to all employees and students whose studies or work activities require them to wear a dust mask for respiratory protection. This training is required initially and every 3 years thereafter.
OH 509 Respiratory Protection: Full Face - This training applies to all employees and students whose studies or work activities require them to wear Full Face respiratory protection. You must first take OH 507 before taking this course. This training is required initially and every 3 years thereafter.
OH 510 Respiratory Protection: Half Face - This training applies to all employees and students whose studies or work activities require them to wear Half Face respiratory protection. You must first take OH 507 before taking this course. This training is required initially and every 3 years thereafter.
OH 511 Respiratory Protection: N95 - This training applies to all employees and students whose studies or work activities require them to wear N95 respiratory protection. You must first take OH 507 before taking this course. This training is required initially and every 3 years thereafter.
OH 512 Respiratory Protection: PAPR - This training applies to all employees and students whose studies or work activities require them to wear PAPR respiratory protection. You must first take OH 507 before taking this course. This training is required initially and every 3 years thereafter.
OH 513 Counterweight Fly Systems Training - This training applies to all employees and students whose studies or work activities require them to work with counterweight fly systems. This video discusses rigging hardware, rigging inspection and safe operations.
OH 514 Fall Protection - This course is designed for individuals with exposure to fall hazards. This course covers how to identify and avoid hazards associated with elevated work locations and the specialized equipment for working in elevated work locations.
OH 515 Asbestos Training for Project Managers - This class is designed to support Project Managers in complying with all applicable asbestos regulations , to ensure that all asbestos containing materials are inspected, and discusses worker and occupant safety.
OH 520 Safe Lifting: Briscoe Center for American History - This course explains safe lifting practices for employees of the Dolph Briscoe Center for American History.
