Updated OH 202 Requirement

An updated OH 202 Hazardous Waste Management course is now available in UT Learn. This course reflects changes in waste management at the University and updated regulations. All employees are required to complete the updated course after January 12, 2022. If you have previously taken OH 202, please follow the OH 202 instructions to make sure your transcript reflects the new date of training.

OH 101 - Hazard Communication

OH 101 (EID required)

The objective for this course is to introduce employees to the hazards of working with or around hazardous chemicals. Course subjects include the following:

  1. Information on interpreting hazardous chemical labels and Material Safety Data Sheets and the relationship between those two methods of hazard communication.
  2. Acute and chronic effects of hazardous chemicals to which employees may be exposed, by chemical category.
  3. Safe handling of hazardous chemicals to which employees may be exposed, by chemical category.
  4. Proper use of protective equipment with respect to the hazardous chemicals to which employees may be exposed, by chemical category.
  5. First aid treatment for exposures with respect to the hazardous chemicals to which employees may be exposed, by chemical category.
  6. General safety instructions on the handling, cleanup procedures, and disposal of hazardous chemicals.

This course is required for many employees by a law passed by the Texas Legislature called the Hazard Communication Act or Right to Know law. If you work with or have the potential to work with hazardous chemicals then you are required to take this course. Examples of people required to take this course are laboratory employees, facility services personnel, utility personnel, printers, and photographers. Even if you have taken a HazCom course at another organization, you must take this course to learn about the hazards of chemicals at your new workplace.

OH 102 - Hazard Communication (site-specific)

This course is taught by your work area supervisor, laboratory principal investigator, or lab supervisor. Training must be documented using the standardized HazCom training record with checklist covering training topics available from EHS below.

OH 107 - Spill Prevention Control & Countermeasures

OH 107 (EID required)

This training is for The University of Texas at Austin’s Spill Prevention Control and Countermeasure plan. This is a federal and state regulation the university is required to follow. Anyone who handles, stores, receives, or dispenses oil and oil related products in quantities greater than or equal to 55 gallons is required by law to receive this training.

OH 108 - Pre-treatment Device Training for Project Managers

OH 108 (EID required)

This training will guide you through the different pretreatment devices that may be installed at UT-Austin. You should be taking this training if you're involved in the design, development, construction, or renovation of university structures that may include pretreatment devices. This training should be completed by responsible parties at least every two years.

OH 109 - Pre-Treatment Device Maintenance

OH 109 (EID required)

This training will guide you through the different pretreatment devices that may be installed at UT-Austin. You should be taking this training if you're involved in design, development, construction, or renovation of university structures that may include pretreatment devices. This training should be completed by responsible parties at least every two years.

OH 111 - EMS for Waste Generators

OH 111 (EID required)

This training will cover Environmental Management System (EMS), a web-based application Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) uses to track chemical waste from the point of generation to disposal. This application supports both Faculty, Researchers, and Staff who generate waste from their day-to-day duties at the University of Texas. EMS is only accessible while on UT’s network or connected with UT’s VPN.

OH 115 - UT Austin Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plan (SWPPP) Training

OH 115 (EID required)

Environmental Health and Safety’s stormwater pollution prevention plan training is required for all project managers, construction administrators, and anyone else involved in the design and construction of campus projects that have significant outdoor soil disturbance. This training will review important definitions, compliance drivers, Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plan preparation, and Best Management Practices.

OH 201 - Laboratory Safety

OH 201 (EID required)

This course explains safe lab practices to minimize the risk of spills and chemical or biological exposures. Laboratories involve many chemicals, procedures, and operations that require specific safety precautions. The course provides information about physical and health hazards present within a laboratory and explains safe lab practices to minimize the risk of spills and chemical or biological exposure.

This course is required for all employees, including faculty, staff, and students who work in a laboratory using hazardous chemicals or biological materials. This training is required even if you have taken a similar course at another institution.

OH 202 - Hazardous Waste Management

OH 202 (EID required)

The course objective is to explain regulated wastes in the laboratory setting and provide simple, less expensive methods for handling wastes. Course contents include: hazardous waste definitions and regulatory environment; chemical waste disposal and spill cleanup procedures; chemical waste storage and segregation guidelines; and waste minimization and drain disposal restrictions.

This course is required for all employees, including faculty, staff, and students who work in a laboratory using hazardous chemicals or biological materials.

OH 204 - Compressed Gases

OH 204 (EID required)

General overview for the use of compressed gas cylinder systems. Incorporated in this training are safe practices and techniques for the storage, use, and maintenance of compressed gas cylinders.

OH 207 - Biological Safety

OH 207 (EID required)

This course explains safe work practices for laboratory employees who work with recombinant DNA (rDNA) and potentially biohazardous materials. This course is required for all laboratory employees working at Biosafety Levels (BSL) 1, 2 or 3 or who work with human specimens. This course covers hazards of working with these materials, practices and equipment required for work at different biosafety levels, waste disposal, incident reporting, and spill cleanup procedures.

OH 210 - Concessions Food Safety

OH 210 (EID required)

This course is for people who prepare and handle food at concession areas. The course provides a basic understanding of the importance of sanitation when working with food, including personal hygiene and facility cleanliness. Topics include foodborne illnesses, food safety procedures, and good work practices.

OH 218 - Bloodborne Pathogens

OH 218 (EID required)

Training required annually for all personnel that work with human blood, tissues, or human cell lines in labs. Topics include safe work practices, the definition of bloodborne pathogens, protection from exposure including universal precautions, and spill clean-up procedures.

OH 221 - Controlled Substances in Research

OH 221 (EID required)

This training provides an overview of the regulations and requirements for the possession and use of controlled substances for research purposes. This course is required for anyone working with controlled substances in their research. This training is required every 3 years.

OH 238 - Laboratory Safety Refresher

OH 238 (EID required)

This course outlines the key safety responsibilities for all personnel who work in labs containing hazardous materials. This course is required for all lab personnel and needs to be taken every three years. Topics covered in this course include: recent lab incidents, common issues found during lab inspections, responsibilities for Principal Investigators, responsibilities for lab staff, standard operating procedures, risk assessments, safety equipment and clothing, emergency response procedures, occupational health, and other lab related resources.

OH 241 - Cryogen Safety

OH 241 (EID required)

General overview for the use of cryogens. This training describes the hazards associated with cryogens along with the practices and procedures for safe handling and storage.

OH 301 - Basic Radiological Health

OH 301 (EID required)

This course provides information on how to work safely with radiation and radioactive materials. Radioactive materials can be hazardous if not used safely. Radioactive materials are used at the University under a broad scope radioactive materials license issued by the Texas Department of State Health Services.

This course is required for all users of radioactive materials, including faculty, staff, and students. Employees who took an equivalent radiation safety course at another location should contact the Radiation Safety Officer at 512-471-3511 regarding site-specific retraining and requalification requirements.

OH 302 - Basic Radiological Health Refresher

OH 302 (EID required)

This course explains current regulations related to radiation, recent changes to the regulations, the responsibilities of radiation users, and campus- specific issues related to radiation.

This course is refresher training recommended for all users of radioactive materials and radiation-producing machines, including faculty, staff, and students. The course is recommended annually for individuals who took the eight-hour Basic Radiological Health course and required for new university employees who took an equivalent radiation course at another location.

OH 304 - Laser Safety

OH 304 (EID required)

Lasers can be hazardous if not used safely. Lasers are used at the University under a certificate of registration issued by the Texas Department of State Health Services. This course provides information on how to work safely with lasers.

This course is required for all users of Class IIIb (3b) and / or Class IV (4) lasers, including faculty, staff, and students. Employees who took an equivalent laser safety training course at another location should contact the Laser Safety Officer at 512-471-3511 regarding site-specific retraining and requalification requirements.

OH 306 - X-Ray Safety

OH 306 (EID required)

Radiation producing machines (x-ray machines) can be hazardous if not used safely. Radiation producing machines are used at the University under a certificate of registration issued by the Texas Department of State Health Services. This course provides information on how to work safely with radiation and radiation producing machines.

This course is required for all users of radiation producing machines, including faculty, staff, and students. Employees who took an equivalent radiation safety training course at another location should contact the Radiation Safety Officer at 512-471-3511 regarding site-specific retraining and requalification requirements.

OH 311 - Radiation Safety Awareness Training

OH 311 (EID required)

Radiation Safety Awareness training is required by the University of Texas at Austin for all students and employees working in labs where radioactive materials are used. This training is not sufficient to allow you to handle Radioactive Materials (RAM), but will familiarize you with the use of RAM in a laboratory and empower you to work around it safely.

OH 330 - NETL Radiation Safety

This course provides information on how to work safely with radiation and radioactive materials at the Nuclear Engineering Teaching Laboratory (NETL). Radioactive materials can be hazardous if not used safely. One of the most important components of any radiological protection program is the training that is provided to facility personnel. A well-trained staff contributes significantly to the safe, efficient operation of the facility during normal and emergency situations and maintaining exposures ALARA. All personnel requiring unescorted access to Restricted Areas in NETL must complete radiation protection training prior to having unescorted access to Restricted Areas.

OH 500 - Machine Shop Safety

OH 500 (EID required)

The objective for this course is to introduce employees and students to the hazards of working in machine shops. The course subjects include the following:

  1. Roles and responsibilities for shop owners and operators.
  2. Basic safe procedures for machine shops.
  3. Common shop equipment and their safe operation.
  4. Common warning signs and labels.

Employees and students are advised that this is general shop safety. Additional site specific training may be required to qualify for working in your shop.

OH 501 - Hearing Protection

EHS wants to ensure that all employees who work in high noise areas, as defined by the University Hearing Protection Overview and Hearing Protection Plan, have the training to keep themselves and their colleagues safe. Through this training you will understand the effects of high noise, how to safely control noise levels, understand the types of hearing protection and when to use it, and your roles and responsibilities.

OH 502 - Ergonomics for Childcare Workers

Muscle strains and sprains are a leading cause of work related injuries among child-care workers. This training was designed to show child-care workers how to safely lift children and objects.

OH 503 - Asbestos General Information

OH 503 (UT EID Required)

This training is intended for all individuals who work around asbestos. Additional training is required for individuals involved in asbestos disturbance or removal operations.

OH 505 - Aerial Lift Training

OH 505 (EID required)

This course is part of the requirements to be qualified to use or operate an aerial lift on campus. Topics include training requirements, fall protection, lift setup, weather information, and lift inspection. This course is required to be taken every 3 years.

OH 506 - Machine Shop Supervisor Training

OH 506 (EID Required)

All employees who are responsible for the safe operations of the equipment in their shop must take Shop Supervisor Training initially and every two years. This person is responsible for filling out the Machine Shop Inspection form. This training will provide employees the knowledge to correctly fill the form to ensure continuous safe operations of the safety devices on fixed equipment.

OH 507 - Respiratory Protection

OH 507 (EID Required)

This training applies to all employees and students whose studies or work activities require them to wear respiratory protection. This is the prequisite training that you must take before taking any of the individual respirator specific training modules. This module is not required to be taken if the only module you need to take is Dust Mask training. This training is required initially and every 3 years thereafter.

OH 508 - Respiratory Protection: Dust Mask

This training applies to all employees and students whose studies or work activities require them to wear a dust mask for respiratory protection. This training is required initially and every 3 years thereafter.

OH 509 - Respiratory Protection: Full Face

OH 509 (EID Required)

This training applies to all employees and students whose studies or work activities require them to wear Full Face respiratory protection. You must first take OH 507 before taking this course. This training is required initially and every 3 years thereafter.

OH 510 - Respiratory Protection: Half Face

This training applies to all employees and students whose studies or work activities require them to wear Half Face respiratory protection. You must first take OH 507 before taking this course. This training is required initially and every 3 years thereafter.

OH 511 - Respiratory Protection: N95

This training applies to all employees and students whose studies or work activities require them to wear N95 respiratory protection. You must first take OH 507 before taking this course. This training is required initially and every 3 years thereafter.

OH 512 - Respiratory Protection: PAPR

This training applies to all employees and students whose studies or work activities require them to wear PAPR respiratory protection. You must first take OH 507 before taking this course. This training is required initially and every 3 years thereafter.

This training applies to all employees and students whose studies or work activities require them to work with counterweight fly systems. This video discusses rigging hardware, rigging inspection and safe operations.

OH 514 - Fall Protection

OH 514 (EID Required)

This course is designed for individuals with exposure to fall hazards. This course covers how to identify and avoid hazards associated with elevated work locations and the specialized equipment for working in elevated work locations.

OH 515 - Asbestos Training for Project Managers

OH 515 (EID Required)

This class is designed to support Project Managers in complying with all applicable asbestos regulations , to ensure that all asbestos containing materials are inspected, and discusses worker and occupant safety.

OH 519 - Ventilation Systems

OH 519 (EID Required)

This course is for staff who work with or design ventilation systems at The University of Texas at Austin. You do not have to view all sections for completion.

OH 520 - Safe Lifting: Briscoe Center for American History

This course explains safe lifting practices for employees of the Dolph Briscoe Center for American History.

OH 601 - Dry Ice Shipping

OH 601 (EID Required)

This course explains how to make dry ice shipments in accordance with the Department of Transportation (DOT) rules and the airline (IATA) requirements. This training applies to shipments where the only regulated hazardous material is the dry ice. The training includes a description of the DOT rules, dry ice hazards, packaging, carrier requirements, and documentation. Hazard Communication training (OH101 and OH102) is also required for people wanting to become certified to ship dry ice packages.

OH 606 - Receiving Hazardous Materials

This course is designed for individuals who receive Department of Transportation (DOT) regulated hazardous materials packages. This course covers how to identify hazardous materials packages, some of the responsibilities for people who ship hazardous materials, and a basic overview of DOT rules.
