Laser Room Design

EHS guidance on laser room design will largely be determined by the hazard class with additional criteria required for Class 4 lasers. EHS will conduct a hazard analysis to determine nominal ocular hazard distance and what types of control measures may be required. For open accessible beams most labs will opt for laser curtains.

Class 4 Lasers will require a lighted laser sign which EHS can provide and there should be a fire extinguisher readily accessible. An emergency stop or equivalent quick shut down will be needed.

All Class 3b and 4 lasers will require a lab placard at the room entrance which EHS will provide.
