Research using laboratory animals has been revolutionized by the creation of humanized animal models, which are immunodeficient animals engrafted with human cells, tissues, or organs. With this new technology comes the need for animal researchers to understand the inherent and potential risks, such as exposure to human bloodborne pathogens. Risk assessments need to be completed to understand any potential risks associated with the work and any additional safety equipment or PPE required.
