Green Labs has two ultra-low temperature (ULT, -80°C) freezers and one -20°C freezer available for UT Austin research labs to use while they defrost their lab’s ULT freezer. Please review the following information before requesting to use a Green Labs freezer. For questions, contact greenlabs@austin.utexas.edu.
- Green Labs Freezer locations:
- Green Labs Freezer reservation:
- Fill out this form at least 10 business days prior to your desired reservation start date. You can see which days have already been reserved here. Once you have filled out the form, a Green Labs team member will be in contact with you and your lab’s Principal Investigator (PI) within the next 2 business days.
- Freezers can only be reserved for 10 days at a time.
- Labs are responsible for transporting their freezer contents to and from the Green Labs Freezer.
- Each Green Labs Freezer has a keypad lock. A pin number will be provided to the lab contact at the beginning of their reservation. At the end of the reservation, the pin number will be changed.
- Freezer defrost supplies and guide:
- Click here (PDF) to see a list of supplies Green Labs provides to labs for a freezer defrost.
- Click here (PDF) to see our Lab Freezer Best Practices, Preventative Maintenance, and Defrost Guide.
- If any spill or other contamination occurs in the Green Labs Freezer the lab using the freezer is required to clean up the spill or contamination as soon as possible (contact EHS if needed).
- No flammable or radioactive materials can be stored in the freezers.
- All items must be removed from the Green Labs freezer by 4 pm on the last day of the reservation.
- We ask that any lab that uses a Green Labs freezer fill out a scorecard. The good news is that the scorecard is super easy to fill out and a Green Labs team member can help your lab every step of the way!
- The Green Labs freezers are not available for research labs to use for extra storage or in the case of a freezer failure.
- Green Labs is not responsible for any samples or other items stored in the Green Labs freezer.
- Every time a freezer is unplugged (especially a freezer older than 10-years-old) there is a chance the freezer will not turn back on once plugged in again. To use a Green Labs freezer, your lab must have a contingency plan in place in case your lab’s freezer does not work after being defrosted.
